Although Mr. White’s legal practice started small – Mr. White told Law360 that it was initially him representing clients from his attic – he eventually landed a drug case that got business booming. And as one of the only African American lawyers practicing in the area, he started getting a heftier caseload.

Eventually, Mr. White started representing victims of sexual abuse instead of alleged perpetrators. Because of his experience defending the accused, he was well aware of the tactics defense lawyers used to try to cast doubt in the minds of the jury. He used this insight to build strong legal strategies for sexual assault survivors.

The Law360 article highlights Mr. White’s most significant sexual assault cases. Mr. White represented some of the women a Michigan State University doctor had sexually abused. Because of Michigan’s statute of limitations on sexual assault at the time, Mr. White came up against several challenges when trying to seek justice for these women. He recognized that the law needed to change to hold the perpetrators and enablers accountable.
Mr. White was instrumental in furthering legislation increasing the statutes of limitations for victims of childhood sexual assault, giving them until their 28th birthday to bring claims. He also proposed a bill that would strip Michigan State of its governmental immunity, prompting the university to quadruple its gymnastics claims settlement.
